Auto Immune
Diseases
There are more than 80
types of auto immune diseases. If one has an autoimmune
disease, the immune system attacks itself by mistake,
and one can get sick. Autoimmune diseases can affect
connective tissue (the tissue which binds together body
tissues and organs), nerves, muscles, the endocrine
system (the system that directs your body’s hormones and
other chemicals), and digestive system. These diseases
tend to run in families, so one’s genes, along with the
way the immune system responds to certain triggers or
things in the environment, affect one’s chances of
getting one of these diseases. Although there is no cure
for autoimmune diseases, the symptoms can be treated and
one can learn to manage the disease with the help of
medication. Some people can take over-the-counter drugs,
like aspirin and ibuprofen for pain. Others with more
severe symptoms may have to take certain kinds of
prescription drugs that can help with pain, swelling,
depression, anxiety, sleep problems, fatigue, or rashes.
Some medication can help slow the progress of the
disease.
