Charitable Events

Phillip Antablin, Mary Bennett, Wilkie Cheong, Jack Denove, Lorraine Jackson and John Rowell attended the Ralph’s Riders Foundation’s fundraising event to support the organization. Ralph’s Riders is a nonprofit organization which enable individuals with spinal cord injuries and paraplegia to achieve their highest level of independence, health and personal fulfillment.To learn more about Ralph’s Riders go to http://www.ralphsriders.org


Recent Trials

John Denove represented a woman who was rear ended and pushed into the vehicle in front of her. The defendant claimed that Mr. Denove's client first rear-ended the vehicle in front of her and then rear ended the client.

The client suffered from degenerative facet arthropathy and underwent several pain management procedures, including epidural injections, neuroplasties and radiofrequency rhizotomies. After Mr. Denove called an accident reconstruction expert and an orthopaedic surgeon, the defendant settled. Click here to see some of the demonstrative evidence that was used during trial.


Recent Appellate Cases

Last year, Cheong, Denove, Rowell, Bennett & Karns won a trial for a woman who suffered nerve injuries when an elevator malfunctioned. The defense appealed the verdict. John Rowell successfully defended the appeal.


Recent Settlements

John Denove and William Karns represented a woman who was struck in the back by a load of drywall being transported by a forklift. The defense argued that the drywall barely touched the woman. She suffered a back injury and was diagnosed with an intervertebral disc injury and underwent spinal surgery. During surgery her vena cava was injured, leaving the client with severe swelling. William Karns settled an elder abuse lawsuit involving a nursing home's neglect of a patient who was recovering from an aneurysm. As a result of the neglect, Mr. Karns' client developed bed sores and contractures.

Alicia Curran and John Denove successfully settled an underinsurance motorist action for the client who was involved in a motor vehicle collision. After the defendant driver paid his policy limits, the client brought the underinsuance motorist action. The client suffered a thoracic outlet syndrome injury as the result of the collision that later caused her to suffer from chronic regional pain syndrome. An insurance bad faith action will now be filed because of the insurance company’s choice to delay paying the underinsured motorist policy limits to its insured who was severely injured.


Bar Association Events

Cheong, Denove, Rowell, Bennett & Karns attended the Friends of the Los Angeles County Law Library "Beacon of Justice Award Reception" honoring Ron Olson. Mr. Olson was honored for his unwavering leadership over the legal profession and his indomitable commitment to civil rights and community service. Cowboy Lawyers Association

Wilkie Cheong, Mary Bennett and John Denove attended the last overnight ride of the year at Bear Valley. These attorneys have been president of the Cowboy Lawyers Association in 1998, 1999 and 2004.

Wilkie Cheong attended the Cowboy Lawyers Association’s day ride in Chino Hills.

Consumer Attorneys of California

Phillip Antablin, Mary Bennett, John Denove and Bill Karns attended the Consumer Attorneys of California 50th Annual Convention in San Francisco. Bill Karns spoke to the group on “Client Intake and Initial Assessment.” John Denove was asked to and did provide individual mentoring to a number of CAOC members. Mary Bennett and John Denove attended the Irish American Bar Association’s dinner honoring the Honorable Mary Ann Murphy as the Trial Judge of the Year. Judge Murphy is a longtime supporter of both the Irish American Bar Association and the Italian American Lawyers Association. New Board Elections

John Denove was elected Treasurer of the Consumer Attorneys of California. CAOC is a statewide organization of more than 3,000 attorneys who represent plaintiffs and consumers who seek responsibility from corporate and individual wrongdoers. Mr. Denove was elected Vice President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. The American Board of Trial Advocates is a nation-wide organization of trial lawyers founded in 1957. To become a member, one needs a certain number of jury trials and must be voted in by a local chapter. The association is dedicated to preserving the Seventh Amendment right to a jury trial. Bill Karns was elected to the Board of Governors of the Consumer Attorneys Association of California. He was also elected to serve on the Board of Governors of the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles. The Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles is dedicated to promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity among trial lawyers, and to promoting the public good through concerted efforts to secure safe products, a safe work place, a clean environment, quality health care, and to eliminate discrimination. Lectures

Bill Karns was invited to lecture to the "Attorney Boot Camp" at Southwestern Law School. The topic of his lecture was "Discovery".

William Karns served as the moderator on the session on "Liens" and the session on "Auto Cases and Expedited Jury Trials." John Rowell gave a demonstration on cross-examination of an accident reconstruction expert. John Denove gave a demonstration on cross-examination of an orthopaedic surgeon and lectured on the topic of chronic pain.

John Denove received acknowledgement from the Advocate for his artitle, PAIN 101, Where Does It Hurt? Making Chronic Pain Understandable.

William Karns co-authored Effective Use of Objections in Responding to Interrogatories, an article which was recently published in the Advocate.
